Abstract

Objective: The objective of this article is to propose and substantiate an integrative theoretical model that explains the social construction of risk perception in cannabis use, based on a critical review of the literature and on contributions developed in previous research. Method: An integrative theoretical study with an interpretive approach was conducted, aimed at the development of a theoretical-exploratory model. Literature on the psychology of risk, sociology of risk, and health communication was analyzed in order to identify conceptual convergences that would allow the integration of different approaches to risk perception in cannabis use. Results: A multidimensional model was proposed, composed of five interrelated dimensions—cognitive, emotional, sociocultural, institutional, and media-related—which were organized into three levels of analysis: micro, meso, and macro, articulated through axes of temporality and contextuality. Conclusion: Risk perception was shown to be a socially constructed phenomenon, providing a useful conceptual framework for the analysis of cannabis use. In this way, a theoretical basis is provided for the design of empirical research, preventive strategies, and public policies aimed at reducing the risks associated with substance use.
