Abstract

Objective: To determine the association between anxiety, precompetitive anxiety, depression, and psychological characteristics related to sports performance in professional soccer players from a first-division team. Methods: A quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional, and correlational study was conducted with 22 male soccer players. The Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 (CSAI-2), and Questionnaire of Psychological Characteristics Related to Sports Performance (CPRD) were administered. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Spearman’s correlations. Results: Among the CSAI-2 dimensions, self-confidence showed the highest mean score (M = 28.57; SD = 5.92). For the CPRD, the mean scores were 61.32 for stress control, 33.48 for influence of performance evaluation, 25.36 for motivation, 25.68 for mental skills, and 19.88 for group cohesion. A positive and statistically significant association was observed between anxiety and depression (rₛ = .636; p < .01). No statistically significant associations were identified between anxiety, precompetitive anxiety, and depression and the overall CPRD score. Conclusions: Anxiety showed a positive and statistically significant association with depression. No statistically significant associations were identified between anxiety, precompetitive anxiety, and depression and the total CPRD score.
